Frequently asked questions
How many days do I need?
Four days for the classic Loop; five to seven if you want to go slowly or travel with children.
When is the best time to go?
March–April and October–November. October–November has the buckwheat flowers but also the biggest crowds.
Do I need a licence to ride?
Yes — a licence valid in Vietnam. Otherwise go with an easy rider or by car.
Can I pay by card?
Rarely outside Ha Giang town. Bring cash.
Is Ha Giang suitable for families?
Yes, by car and at a slow pace. Since 1 July 2026, children under 10 and shorter than 1.35 m may not sit in the front row of a car. See our guide to Ha Giang with kids.
Can I do the Loop without a motorbike licence?
Yes — sit behind a licensed easy rider, go by car with a local driver, or take coaches between the main towns. Riding yourself without a licence valid in Vietnam is against the law.
Can I do the whole Loop by car?
Yes. The classic Loop of about 350–400 km is on roads that cars use every day; plan 2–4 hours of driving a day.
Is the rainy season a problem?
From June to August heavy rain and landslides can close roads for hours or days. Keep buffer days, drive in daylight and check road conditions each morning.
Ha Giang or Sa Pa?
Sa Pa is quicker to reach and works from one town base. Ha Giang is a 4–6 day road journey through a remote karst plateau. With little time, choose one.
