The Ha Giang Visitor Pledge

For you this is an adventure. For hundreds of thousands of people, it is home. Come as the kind of guest people want to welcome back.

  1. 1

    Take your rubbish home

The stone plateau has very little waste collection. Carry a rubbish bag, avoid single-use plastic bottles and take your waste back to town.

  2. 2

    Go slowly, go safely

Only ride or drive what you are licensed and experienced for. No drinking and driving, no riding after dark, and only stop at safe pull-outs — never on a bend.

  3. 3

Ask before you take a photo

Always ask before photographing people up close, especially children and elders. Don’t give children money or sweets in exchange for pictures.

  4. 4

Respect homes, fields and sacred places

Don’t enter a house or yard unless you are invited. Flower fields are farmers’ crops — only walk in with permission. Stay on paths and never climb on stone walls, graves or monuments.

  5. 5

    Spend locally, pay fairly

Eat, sleep and shop where local people are the owners, and pay the price you agreed. Every trip should leave something good behind.

Why only five?

These are general principles of conduct. The customs of each community in Ha Giang are diverse, and we will only write about them once people from those communities have checked and agreed to what we say.
