Short answer

Ha Giang works well for families if you go by car with a local driver, keep driving days to 2–4 hours, and allow 5–6 days instead of rushing the Loop in three. March–April and October–November are the most comfortable months. Since 1 July 2026, children under 10 and shorter than 1.35 m may not sit in the front row of a car.

How to plan it

  • Go by car with a local driver. It is the safest and most comfortable way with children or older relatives — see Ha Giang by car.
  • Take 5–6 days, not three. Our 5-day family itinerary keeps every driving day to about 2–4 hours and arrives early.
  • Sleep in the Quan Ba valley on the first night. The first day from Ha Giang town is short, so everyone gets used to the mountain roads.
  • Keep a buffer day for bad weather or a tired child.

When to go

  • March–April: pleasant and quieter.
  • October–November: dry and clear, with buckwheat flowers — but the busiest months; book early. (The golden rice of Hoang Su Phi, off the Loop, comes in late September to early October.)
  • June–August: the rainy season, with a risk of landslides closing roads.
  • December–January: cold, with possible frost on the high plateau. Pack warm layers for everyone.

Getting there

From Ha Noi, a private car takes about 5.5–6.5 hours to Ha Giang town and lets you stop when the children need to. Limousine vans and sleeper buses are cheaper; overnight buses save a day, but many people arrive tired — with children, a day trip or a private car is usually easier. See getting to Ha Giang.

Children in the car: the 2026 rule

Under Vietnam’s Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety, as amended from 1 July 2026, when a car carries a child under 10 and shorter than 1.35 m:

  • the child must not sit in the same row as the driver (unless the car has only one row of seats);
  • the driver must use a suitable child safety seat — except in commercial passenger vehicles.

A hired car with a driver from a transport business is a commercial passenger vehicle, so a child seat is not required by law, but the front-row rule still matters for safety. If you want a child seat, bring your own or ask the provider before you confirm.

Carsickness

The Loop is a long chain of bends. What helps:

  • sit facing forward and look out at the horizon;
  • eat lightly before the passes, keep water and plain snacks to hand;
  • ask your driver for frequent short stops;
  • if your child takes something for motion sickness at home, bring it.

Stops that suit families

  • Quan Ba Heaven Gate and the Twin Mountains — big views right by the road. More
  • Vuong family mansion — a historic house in a quiet valley a short drive from Dong Van; an easy visit for all ages. More
  • Lung Cu flag tower — at about 1,470 m above sea level, with many steps; take your time with older travellers. More
  • Nho Que river boat — only if everyone keeps a life jacket on for the whole trip; the province told boat operators to enforce this in 2026. The path down is steep and narrow. More
  • Lung Khuy cave — the uphill walk is steep in places; not ideal for small children or anyone with bad knees. More

Health and emergencies

  • Emergency numbers: police 113, fire & rescue 114, ambulance 115. Save your accommodation’s phone number offline.
  • Bring any medicines your family needs: the highland towns are small, and some places on the road are far from a pharmacy.
  • Carry enough cash — see money and SIM cards.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ha Giang suitable for young children?

Yes, by car and at a slow pace. The long, winding drives are the hardest part for children, so plan short driving days and frequent stops. Riding a motorbike on the passes with small children is not a good idea.

Do I need a child car seat in Ha Giang?

From 1 July 2026 Vietnamese law says children under 10 and shorter than 1.35 m must not sit in the same row as the driver, and private cars must use a suitable child safety seat. Commercial passenger vehicles, such as a hired car with a driver from a transport business, are exempt from the child-seat requirement, but you can bring your own or ask in advance.

How many days should a family plan?

Five or six days for the classic Loop by car, so that no day has more than about four hours of driving.

Which months are best with children?

March–April (pleasant and quiet) and October–November (dry and clear, but the busiest months) are usually the most comfortable. June to August is the rainy season with a risk of landslides; December and January are cold, with possible frost on the high plateau.
