Ha Giang by car: a practical guide

Short answer

Yes, you can do the whole Ha Giang Loop by car. The classic route is about 350–400 km on the same mountain roads the motorbikes use, and most people take 4–6 days with a local driver. Plan 2–4 hours of driving a day, arrive before dark and leave time to stop at the viewpoints.

Who a car suits

  • Families with young children, and older travellers.
  • Anyone without a motorbike licence valid in Vietnam, or who would rather not ride mountain passes — see Ha Giang without a motorbike licence.
  • People who feel the cold: from December to February the high plateau can see frost.
  • Slow trips of 5–7 days, including Hoang Su Phi in the west, off the classic Loop.

You see the same views as on a motorbike. What you lose is some of the wind-in-your-face feeling and the freedom to stop on any bend; what you gain is a seat belt, a roof in the rain and a driver who knows the road.

The route and daily driving

The classic Loop starts and ends in Ha Giang town and runs north through Quan Ba, Yen Minh and Dong Van, over the Ma Pi Leng pass to Meo Vac, then back south through the Du Gia valley. In total it is about 350–400 km.

A comfortable rhythm by car, taken from our 5-day family itinerary:

Day Leg Distance Driving
1 Ha Giang town → Quan Ba ~45 km ~2 h
2 Quan Ba → Yen Minh → Dong Van ~100 km ~4 h
3 Dong Van and Lung Cu ~50 km ~2 h
4 Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng → Meo Vac → Du Gia ~95 km ~4 h
5 Du Gia → Ha Giang town ~110 km ~4 h

Driving times include short photo stops but not long visits. If you only have four days, see the classic 4-day Loop; for more time, the slow 6-day itinerary.

Getting to Ha Giang town

From Ha Noi, a private car takes about 5.5–6.5 hours to Ha Giang town. Many travellers come up by limousine van or sleeper bus and start the car part of the trip in Ha Giang town — see getting to Ha Giang.

Car with a driver, or drive yourself?

With a local driver is what most visitors choose. Ask for:

  • a licensed transport or travel business and a written agreement that names the driver, the vehicle, the route and the stops;
  • the same driver for the whole trip;
  • working seat belts in every seat and a well-maintained vehicle;
  • no alcohol, and no driving the passes after dark.

Driving yourself is legal only with a licence valid in Vietnam — a Vietnamese car licence, or an International Driving Permit under the 1968 Vienna Convention that covers cars, carried with your national licence. The passes are narrow, with trucks, buses and many tourist motorbikes around blind bends.

Children in the car

Since 1 July 2026, Vietnamese law says that children under 10 and shorter than 1.35 m must not sit in the same row as the driver (unless the car has only one row of seats), and the driver must use a suitable child safety seat — except in commercial passenger vehicles. A hired car with a driver from a transport business is exempt from the child-seat requirement, but many parents still bring or ask for one. More in Ha Giang with kids.

Tips for the mountain roads

  • Carsickness: the bends are long and many. Sit facing forward, look out at the horizon, eat lightly before the passes and ask for short stops.
  • Daylight: plan to arrive before dark; fog is common in the early morning in the cool months.
  • Stops: pull in only where there is space off the road, such as the marked parking area at the Quan Ba Heaven Gate — never on a bend.
  • Rain: in the rainy season (roughly June to August) landslides can close roads. Keep a buffer day. See road safety.
  • Cash: carry enough cash for entrance fees, food and homestays — see money and SIM cards.

Frequently asked questions

Can a car drive the whole Ha Giang Loop?

Yes. The classic Loop through Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, Ma Pi Leng, Meo Vac and Du Gia is on roads that cars, vans and buses use every day. Some village tracks off the main route are only practical on foot or by motorbike.

How many days do I need by car?

Four days is comfortable for the classic Loop; five or six days if you travel with children or older relatives, or want a slower pace. Three days is possible but makes for long driving days.

How long does it take from Ha Noi to Ha Giang by car?

About 5.5–6.5 hours by private car to Ha Giang town, longer in bad weather or at holiday times.

Can I drive a car myself in Ha Giang?

Only with a licence valid in Vietnam: a Vietnamese car licence, or an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention that covers cars, carried with your national licence. Most visitors hire a car with a local driver who knows the passes.
