Short answer

Almost everyone travels from Ha Noi to Ha Giang town by sleeper bus or limousine van (about 6.5–8 hours, day or night; a private car takes about 5.5–6.5 hours) or by private car. There is no airport in Ha Giang; the nearest international airport is Ha Noi.

By bus

Sleeper buses run between Ha Noi and Ha Giang town every day, most of them overnight. Many hostels and hotels in Ha Noi can book a seat for you, and some buses pick up in the Old Quarter.

By limousine van

Limousine vans (9–11 comfortable seats) run between Ha Noi and Ha Giang town by day and by night, and are a popular step up from the sleeper bus. They cost a little more but are quieter and usually faster.

Renting a motorbike in Ha Giang Town

Many travellers rent a motorbike in Ha Giang town rather than bringing one. Only ride if you hold a licence valid in Vietnam — see licence, insurance & permits — and check the bike, brakes, tyres and helmet before you leave.

By private car

A private car with a driver is the most comfortable option for families and small groups, and lets you stop on the way. It also means you arrive in daylight. Prices, time and what to agree: private car from Ha Noi to Ha Giang.

Arrive rested

The most common mistake we see is starting the mountain roads straight after a night bus. If you plan to ride yourself, sleep in Ha Giang town first — the Loop will still be there in the morning.

In the rainy season

From June to September heavy rain can cause landslides on the roads north. On 29 September 2024 a deadly landslide cut National Road 2 between Ha Giang and Tuyen Quang, the main road from Ha Noi. In the rainy months, check the news before you travel and keep a spare day.

Once you arrive

How you travel the Loop matters more than how you get to Ha Giang town — see self-ride, easy rider or car, Ha Giang by car and, with children, Ha Giang with kids. Still choosing? Read Ha Giang or Sa Pa?

A note on names

Since 1 July 2025 Ha Giang has been part of Tuyen Quang province, and the old districts no longer exist. Travellers and locals still call the region Ha Giang, and so do we.
