Road safety on the Ha Giang Loop

Short answer

Go slowly, never ride after dark, stop only at safe pull-outs and don't ride in fog or heavy rain. Vietnamese law allows no alcohol at all when you drive or ride, and helmets must be worn and fastened by rider and passenger. If you are not an experienced rider, go with a licensed easy rider or by car.

The road

The passes are narrow and winding, and you share them with trucks, buses, livestock and many tourist motorbikes. Assume there is traffic around every blind bend, keep to your side of the road and use your horn lightly before tight corners. Plan short riding days and stop before you get tired.

Weather

  • Fog can appear suddenly, especially in the early morning and in the cool months.
  • Rain makes the roads slippery; in the rainy season (roughly June to August) landslides can close roads.
  • Cold in December–January can bring frost on the high plateau.

Plan a buffer day and don’t push on in bad conditions. Don’t ride the passes after dark.

The rules

  • No alcohol at all. The Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety (in force since 1 January 2025) forbids driving or riding with any alcohol in your blood or breath. There is no “one beer” limit.
  • Helmets. Rider and passenger must wear a helmet that meets the national standard, with the strap fastened.
  • Licence and papers. Carry a licence that is valid in Vietnam, your passport and the bike’s papers — see licence, insurance & permits.
  • Children in cars. Since 1 July 2026, children under 10 and shorter than 1.35 m may not sit in the same row as the driver (unless the car has only one row), and the driver must use a suitable child seat — except in commercial passenger vehicles. See Ha Giang with kids.

Choosing a tour or easy rider

After a fatal accident on the Loop in 2026, the Tuyen Quang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism told motorbike tour operators to tighten safety: only licensed travel businesses may sell tours; each trip needs a written agreement that names the driver, the vehicle, the route and the stops; helmets and protective gear for every guest; and no swapping drivers or changing the route without agreement. Use these points as your checklist when you book.

Gear

A proper helmet, closed shoes, long trousers, a jacket and gloves. A rain layer in every season.

Emergencies

Police 113 · Fire & rescue 114 · Ambulance 115. Save your accommodation’s phone number offline.

Read the Visitor Pledge too — safe travel is part of being a good guest.

Frequently asked questions

What are the emergency numbers in Vietnam?

113 for police, 114 for fire and rescue, 115 for an ambulance.

How do I choose a motorbike tour or easy rider?

Book with a licensed travel business and ask for a written agreement that names the driver, the vehicle, the route and the stops. Local tourism authorities asked operators to work this way in April 2026.
