Best time
Clear mornings from October to March for the cloud sea. Start before dawn.
Getting there
In the Hoang Su Phi area, about 3-4 hours by motorbike from Ha Giang town. A steep, narrow road, then the last part on foot up steps and a rocky path.

Chieu Lau Thi is one of the highest peaks in the Hoang Su Phi area, at about 2,400 m. Locals sometimes call it the "nine-step mountain" — each step being a section of the climb. On clear mornings you can look out from the summit over layers of cloud filling the valleys below, with the ridges of the western Ha Giang highlands rising through them like islands.

The peak is outside the classic Ha Giang Loop, in the Hoang Su Phi district to the west. Most people who come here are making a separate trip from Ha Giang town (about 3 to 4 hours by motorbike) or combining it with the Hoang Su Phi terraced rice fields. It is not a quick side trip from the main loop road.

Getting to the summit is a serious effort. The road up from the valley is steep and narrow — manageable on a motorbike in dry weather, but slippery and risky when wet. From the end of the road, the final section is on foot: long flights of concrete and stone steps, then a rocky path through forest and scrub. The walk up takes about 1 to 1.5 hours depending on your fitness and the conditions. It is not technically difficult, but it is sustained and steep, and the last section near the top is exposed.

Weather is the main variable. The sea of clouds that draws people here forms on clear, still mornings — typically in the cooler months from October to March, and sometimes in April and May. But the mountain makes its own weather. It can be cold, wet and windy at the summit even when the valley below is warm and sunny. Cloud can roll in within minutes and turn the view to white. If you are unlucky with the weather, you see nothing from the top.

Start early — most people leave their accommodation at 3 or 4 am to reach the summit before dawn. Bring a warm layer and a rain jacket even in summer. Wear shoes with good grip for the steps and the rocky section near the top. Bring a headlamp for the pre-dawn climb, water, and a snack. Don't ride the road down in fog or after dark — it is narrow, steep and has no barriers.

The reward on a good morning is one of the best views in Ha Giang: cloud rolling through the valleys, the sky turning orange, and almost no one else there. On a bad morning, you get exercise and wet shoes. Either way, it is a mountain that earns its view.

  • Start before dawn if you want the cloud sea; it often clears or thickens by mid-morning.
  • Bring a warm layer and rain jacket, even in summer.
  • Don't ride the road down in fog or after dark.
