- Best time

- Getting there
- On the main road heading north out of Ha Giang town — you pass it on the way to the Loop.
The Km 0 marker stands on the main road heading north out of Ha Giang town, and for most travellers it is the first stop of the Loop. There is nothing complicated about it — a concrete marker, a roadside pull-off, maybe a banner — but it has become a ritual. You park your bike next to it, take a photo with your helmet, and then you ride north into whatever the next few days will bring.
The marker itself takes about two minutes. It is a symbolic starting point, not a sight to linger over, and the real journey begins the moment you leave it behind and the road starts to climb towards Bac Sum Pass. But for something so simple, it carries a surprising amount of meaning for the people who stop there. It is the moment when the trip stops being a plan and starts being real.
Go early in the morning if you want the marker without a crowd. Tour groups and independent riders tend to arrive in waves after breakfast at their hotels, and between about 8 and 9 am the area can be packed, with people queuing to stand next to the marker. Before 7 am, you are more likely to have it to yourself, and the morning light is better for photos anyway.
Some travellers skip it entirely, and that is fine too. It is not a place you need to see — it is a place that marks a beginning, and if you would rather just start riding, nobody will mind. The road does not care whether you stopped for a photo.
If you are starting from Ha Giang town, the Km 0 marker is on the way out. You do not need to make a special trip to find it. Just keep your eyes open on the right side of the road as you head north — it is well signposted and usually obvious from the cluster of motorbikes parked around it.
