- Region
- Meo Vac
- Best time
- Morning for the best light in the canyon; check boat availability after heavy rain.
- Getting there
- Down a steep, narrow side road from Ma Pi Leng Pass. The descent is rough — first gear on a motorbike, and watch for gravel.
From the road on Ma Pi Leng, you look straight down into Tu San canyon and see the Nho Que as a thin ribbon of turquoise, impossibly far below. The canyon drops roughly 800 metres from road to river, and the colour of the water — that clean, pale green — looks almost unreal against the grey limestone walls. It is one of the deepest canyons in Southeast Asia, and it marks the border between Ha Giang and Cao Bang provinces.
A steep side road winds down from the main road towards the river. The descent is narrow, rough in places, and drops fast — if you are on a motorbike, take it in first gear and watch for loose gravel, especially in the wet season. At the bottom, boat operators offer trips along the river, taking you into the canyon where the walls rise on either side and the light filters down in shafts. The ride up the canyon is quiet and slow, and the scale of the place only becomes real when you are inside it.
Safety on the water matters. After incidents in previous years, the province in 2026 directed boat operators to enforce life jacket use for all passengers throughout the trip. Wear yours properly — buckled, not draped over your shoulders — and stay seated in the boat. The river is calm most of the year, but after heavy rain the water level rises and the current strengthens; in those conditions, check whether boats are running before you make the descent, because going down and finding nothing at the bottom means climbing all the way back up.
The boat trip itself takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes. Operators quote prices per boat, not per person, so a small group can split the cost. Prices are posted at the landing but can vary — settle the fare before you board and confirm what is included (some trips go further up the canyon than others).
If you do not want to take a boat, the descent alone is worth it for the view from the river bank. But be honest about the climb back up — the road gains altitude quickly, and in the midday heat it is hard work on a motorbike and exhausting on foot.
The best light in the canyon is in the morning, when the sun is high enough to reach the water but has not yet flattened the colours. By early afternoon, shadow fills the lower canyon and the turquoise fades. If you are coming from Dong Van towards Meo Vac, the timing works naturally — you reach Ma Pi Leng in the late morning and can descend while the light is still good.
Local tips
- Settle the boat fare before boarding — prices are per boat, not per person.
- Wear your life jacket properly for the whole trip — buckled, not draped.
- Morning light gives the best colour on the water; afternoon shadow fills the canyon.
