Short answer

July is the peak of Ha Giang's rainy season: heavy rain, slippery passes and landslides that can close roads for hours or days. The valleys are at their greenest and there are very few visitors, but only travel with buffer days, drive in daylight and check road conditions every morning.

Weather

July is the peak of the rainy season. Rain can be heavy and long, the passes get slippery, and landslides and rockfalls can close roads for hours or days. The road from Ha Noi is affected too: in late September 2024 a deadly landslide cut National Road 2 between Ha Giang and Tuyen Quang.

What to see

Is it safe?

It can be, with the right plan:

  • Flexible dates and buffer days — be ready to wait a day if a road is closed.
  • Daylight only; never drive the passes in heavy rain, fog or after dark.
  • Check road conditions every morning with your accommodation or driver, and follow official closures.
  • Go by car with a local driver rather than riding a motorbike — see Ha Giang by car.
  • Read road safety before you go.

Crowds

July is one of the quietest months, and rooms are usually easy to find.
