Short answer

June is hot and wet in Ha Giang, with afternoon storms and a growing risk of landslides. In return the valleys turn green with young rice, waterfalls are at their fullest, and there are few visitors. The Hoang Su Phi water season lasts into early June.

Weather

June is hot and wet, with afternoon storms. As the rainy season builds, so does the risk of rockfalls and landslides on the mountain roads — in August 2024, for example, a rockfall blocked National Road 4C in Quan Ba, the main road from Ha Giang town to the stone plateau.

What to see

  • Young green rice in the valleys and on the terraces.
  • Waterfalls at their fullest, such as the Du Gia waterfall — follow the signs on site and stay out of the water after heavy rain.
  • The last days of the water season on the Hoang Su Phi terraces in early June.
  • A calm, green stay in the Du Gia valley.

Crowds

June is one of the quietest months on the Loop — easy to find rooms, few vehicles on the passes.

Rainy-season tips

  • Drive in daylight only, and wait out heavy rain rather than pushing on.
  • Keep a buffer day in your plan, and ask your accommodation or driver about road conditions each morning.
  • A car with a local driver is much safer and drier than a motorbike in the rain — see Ha Giang by car and road safety.
  • Pack a rain layer for every day — see what to pack.

Frequently asked questions

Is June a good time to visit Ha Giang?

For green landscapes and quiet roads, yes — but it is the rainy season. Expect afternoon storms, keep driving days short and allow a buffer day in case a road is closed.

Is the Ha Giang Loop dangerous in the rainy season?

Rain makes the passes slippery and landslides can block roads, especially from June to August. Drive only in daylight, avoid heavy rain and check road conditions each morning; travelling by car with a local driver is the safer choice.

Can I still see the water season in June?

In early June, often yes — the Hoang Su Phi water season runs from late May to early June.
