Short answer
March is one of the nicest months for Ha Giang: mild days, cool nights and quieter roads after Tet. The last peach, plum and yellow mustard flowers last until the end of the month, red silk-cotton (gao) flowers light up Dong Van and Yen Minh, and green returns to the fields. Expect fog in the early mornings.
Weather
March brings mild days and cool nights. Fog is common in the early morning, so start driving a little later and keep to daylight. Bring layers: the plateau is always cooler than Ha Noi — see what to pack.
What to see
- The last spring blossoms. Peach, plum and yellow mustard flowers open in turn from late January to the end of March around villages such as Pho Bang, Sung La, Lao Xa and Sa Phin. See spring blossom season.
- Red silk-cotton flowers (hoa gao) in March, bright along the villages and roads of Dong Van and Yen Minh.
- Green returning to the fields, and a calm stay in the Du Gia valley.
Crowds and booking
After the Tet rush, March is usually moderately busy — more choice of rooms and fewer vehicles on the passes than in February or October–November. Weekends are busier than weekdays.
Planning tips
- A spring trip suits a slower pace: see the slow 6-day itinerary or, with children, Ha Giang with kids.
- Carry cash and download offline maps before you leave Ha Giang town — see money and SIM cards.
