The "sky path" (often called the skywalk) is an old footpath that runs along the cliffs of Ma Pi Leng, below the paved road between Dong Van and Meo Vac. From it you look straight down into the Nho Que River canyon, hundreds of metres below. The path was originally cut by workers and local people long before the road was built, and parts of it are still rough and narrow.
The full walk takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on how far you go and how careful you need to be on the narrower sections. Many people walk only a short section — 20 or 30 minutes in — and come back the same way, which is perfectly fine and still gives you the view. Motorbikes are not allowed on the walking sections.
This is a path, not a built viewing platform. There are no ticket booths, no guardrails on most sections, and no rescue teams. Parts of it are narrow enough that you need to watch your footing, with loose stones and uneven rock on one side and a long drop on the other. After rain the surface gets slippery. In fog you cannot see the edge clearly. In strong wind the exposed sections feel unsafe.
Walk it only on a dry, clear morning. Wear shoes with good grip — not sandals, not flip-flops. Keep children close and hold their hands on narrow parts. Stay well back from the edge, and don't stand on the lip for photos. If you are not comfortable with heights, or if the weather turns while you are out there, turn back. The viewpoints on the road above give a similar panorama without the risk.
The usual starting point is near the Youth Monument (Tuong dai Thanh nien xung phong) along the Ma Pi Leng road. Park your bike there and walk. Go in the morning, when the light is best and the air is clear, and leave yourself plenty of time to get back before midday, when cloud and heat tend to build.
There is no entrance fee (checked 2024). Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat. Tell someone where you are going.
Local tips
- Park at the trailhead near the Youth Monument and walk — never ride a motorbike onto the path.
- Go in the morning and turn back early rather than pushing on when the path gets narrower.
- Don't stand on the edge for photos — the drop is real.
