Short answer

December in Ha Giang is cold and mostly dry, with possible frost on the high plateau. Roads are quieter and skies often clear after the busy flower season, and in 2026 some buckwheat fields are planned to keep flowering until the end of the month. Pack proper winter clothes and take care on the passes on frosty early mornings.

Weather

December is cold, and frost is possible on the high plateau around Dong Van and Meo Vac. In the coldest winter spells even ice can form — in January 2024 freezing rain left ice on plants and fences in Meo Vac. Days are mostly dry, and after the flower season the skies are often clear. Nights are cold and many homestays have no heating.

What to see

  • The last buckwheat. In some years a few fields are still in flower. For 2026 the province sowed the buckwheat in three waves so that flowers continue until the end of December — see buckwheat flower season.
  • Quiet roads and clear skies after the October–November rush: a good time for the Lung Cu flag tower, the Vuong family mansion and the views from Ma Pi Leng.
  • Winter, Tet and the start of the blossom season follow in January and February — see winter and Tet.

Driving in the cold

  • Take care on frosty mornings. Frost can make the high roads slippery; start a little later and keep to daylight.
  • Fog is common on cold mornings — drive slowly and stop only where there is space off the road.
  • A car is much warmer than a motorbike in December: wind chill on the passes makes it feel far colder than the forecast. See Ha Giang by car and road safety.

Crowds

December is usually calmer than October and November. You can often book closer to your dates, but if you travel over a weekend or around the New Year holiday, book ahead.
