Short answer

October and November are the best months for buckwheat flowers. The timing shifts by year and altitude, making these the busiest months on the Loop.

When it happens

The buckwheat flower (tam giac mach in Vietnamese) season generally runs from October into December, and is at its best in October and November. Because these are mountain crops, the exact blooming time shifts by one to three weeks from year to year depending on the weather and the altitude of the fields.

October and November are also the busiest months on the Ha Giang Loop. The weather is dry and clear, bringing large crowds.

Where to see it

The most famous fields are found in the northern highlands, especially around Dong Van and Meo Vac. You will see fields of small pink and white flowers planted in the valleys and along the mountain passes, including near the Ma Pi Leng Pass.

Practical & safety notes

While the weather is mostly dry, clear, and cool, this is peak season. Accommodation in Dong Van and Meo Vac books up quickly, especially on weekends. The passes can be very busy with other riders and vehicles. Travel midweek and start your days early to avoid the heaviest crowds.

2026 season

The 12th Buckwheat Flower Festival opens at 8 pm on 25 October 2026 at the Youth Square in Dong Van. For 2026 the province sowed more than 240 ha in three waves so that fields flower from October to the end of December. Month by month: October · November · December.

Festival dates and locations are announced by the provincial tourism authorities each year. Bloom timing: VnExpress Ha Giang travel guide.
