Short answer
October is one of the best months for Ha Giang: dry, clear and cool — the best driving weather of the year. Buckwheat flowers start to bloom on the stone plateau, and Hoang Su Phi's golden rice lasts into early October. It is also one of the busiest months: in 2026 the Buckwheat Flower Festival opens in Dong Van on the evening of 25 October.
Weather
October is usually dry, clear and cool, with the most reliable driving weather of the year after the summer rains. Days are pleasant and nights get cold on the high plateau around Dong Van, so bring warm layers for the evenings — see what to pack. Fog can still form in the early morning.
What to see
- Buckwheat flowers start to bloom on the stone plateau. For the 2026 season the province planted more than 240 ha in 12 communes — the largest areas around Dong Van (100 ha), Sa Phin (50 ha), Lung Cu (39 ha) and Pho Bang (18 ha), with smaller fields in Quan Ba and Yen Minh. Fields were sown in three waves so that flowers last from October to the end of December. More in buckwheat flower season.
- Golden rice on the Hoang Su Phi terraces, off the classic Loop, usually lasts from late September into early October — see golden rice season.
- Clear views from the passes: Tham Ma slope, the Sung La valley and the road north to Lung Cu.

- Expect more traffic on the passes, and stop only where there is space off the road — see road safety.
Getting around
The classic Loop takes four days at a comfortable pace; with children or older relatives, plan five or six — see Ha Giang by car. Cars and drivers book up in October, so ask early if you want to hire a driver.
